Scarecrow Setup
September 19th through October 1st

Mark your calendars, the Annual Scarecrow Festival will be the event of the season!  The contest will take place on the front lawn of the Publick House with more than 50 scarecrows anticipated this year.  The Annual Harvest Festival will conclude the contest with events such as the pumpkin decorating contest, a farmer's market and festivities planned by the Sturbridge Area Tourist Association 'On The Common'.  Be sure to stop by and cast a ballot this year for your favorite scarecrow, as this is one festival you won't want to miss.

Contest Rules

  1. Individuals or groups are eligible to enter in one of the following categories:
    ~  Youth (ages 15 & under, no help from adults please)
    ~  Adults (ages 16 & older)
    ~  Artist
    ~  Group (scout troops, classrooms, neighbors, friends, etc.)
    ~  Family
    ~  Business

  2. Registration and set-up will take place on September 19th through October 1, 2008 from 10am until 2pm.  Upon arrival, check in with us at the front desk to register.  Remember that registration is available on a first come first served basis.  Please unload your supplies as quickly as possible and then move your vehicles to the rear of Sadie Green's before setting up your scarecrow. Setup can be anytime between Friday, September 19th and Wednesday, October 1st.

  3. Each entry must be prepared to sit or stand on its own props.  No props will be provided.  Stakes may be driven, however grounds must be left as before scarecrows arrived.  Do not drive nails into trees.

  4. Rubber, plastic or store bought masks are not allowed.

  5. Participants are not allowed to enter a Scarecrow that was entered in a previous year.

  6. Each entry must be constructed to withstand all weather conditions.  Scarecrows must be firmly packed.  If fresh vegetables are used, replace as necessary.

  7. All scarecrows must be named.  Use a small sign no larger than 11"x17".

  8. Creators are responsible for keeping their scarecrow in good viewing and picture taking condition from set-up until award day.  Scarecrows must be checked each week and more often if weather is bad. Any scarecrow deemed "ruined" by our staff will be removed in 24 hours.

  9. Artist category includes any person who sells their artwork.

  10. Entrants in the business category may incorporate subtle use of company name.

  11. Votes will be cast by viewing public.  Ballots are available at the Publick House Bake Shoppe, and at Sadie Green's, which is located at the Publick House property.  Votes may be cast from October 2nd through October 18th.

  12. Prizes are awarded on Sunday, October 19th at 2pm.  Entrants or a designated representative must be present.

  13. Breakdown and remove scarecrows by Tuesday, November 1, 2007.

  14. When designing your scarecrow, please keep in mind that this a family event.  Please no political, religious or excessively violent scarecrows.  The Publick House reserves the right not to accept any scarecrow that is deemed to be inappropriate.
